McDougal Orchards

“I took the whole day to get lost, go leaf peeping, and came upon this neat gem of an Orchard. Since I hadn't been Apple Picking for years, I decided to stop in and pick a few. It was also an opportunity to take some photos. I was far from home so I didn't have much time here. Regrets. Entering the barn I asked the woman inside how things went as I'd never been. She explained the process and told me I could tell her the kind of apples I wanted and she'd get me there. Now, when I mispronounced the Macoun Apples as (Macoon), the woman was quick to correct me. Macoun (Macowan) I thanked her for correcting my years of mispronunciation. I saw some complaints on treatment before I came in to do my review and let me clarify for those soft ego'd folks. You are in New England and we don't mince words. What would seem rude and cutting to you all, is actually our way of making sure you don't make the same mistake again. Thus, saving any further and, potentially worse, embarrassment for you. Can you imaging me, all these LONG YEARS, mispronouncing Macoun! Not one of the other Orchards correcting me! I've even said it in Hannaford ... I'm thoroughly embarrassed. It brings me back to when, in Game of Thrones, Cersei was made to walk the town naked. SHAME! SHAME! SHAME! on those people who did not correct me. LOL On a serious note, as I stood there, a young couple walked quickly through the barn and, when the woman in charge asked where they were going, they first ignored her and, upon a third request, rudely treated her like she had no business or right to ask. HELLO! So, next time someone at business seems rude or curt, please understand that they work hard, have responsibilities, and are dealing with an increasingly entitled and sometimes wickedly rude public. As for the Orchard, it was delightful! Even though it was late in the season there were plenty of apples and fresh air. I met a few good natured people, took a great photo of a Migrating Monarch, picked some apples, and explored a new place. The Orchard was well maintained and organized with newly planted trees and, where I was, surrounded by very high deer fencing. The house and barn were neat, clean, and heavily planted with beautiful flowers. Very child friendly place with a small playground and open places to run off all that excess energy kids have. Tons of choices of apples (over 40 including crab apples and my favorite Macoun -> now said correctly, thank you!), pumpkins, canned goods, donuts, honey, maple syrup, and pies. I wish I had stumbled in earlier during raspberry season! There were Birding opportunities here, too. I saw Turkey Vultures, Thrashers, Sparrows, Chickadees, etc. and heard a Turkey and a Whippoorwill! This was a great Orchard with good, hardworking folks who take pride in what they do and all they have to offer. Thank you!”

“We had the pleasure of visiting McDougal Orchards this weekend. This place has such a rich history, McDougal Orchards is a diversified, seventh generation family farm in Southern Maine. The variety of high quality apples and produce is incredible. The Apple Trees were heavy with beautiful fruit, well maintained grounds and helpful staff. The Apple Cider Donuts are a must, go for the bakers dozen and save some time. Along with Apples and Donuts they have Gourds, Local Honey, Vegetables, Nuts, Pumpkins/Squash, Apple Cider and Local Crafts. “Absolutely beautiful orchard and incredibly friendly staff. We came on a Saturday morning and had a great time apple picking, taking a wagon ride, and trying out apple cider donuts from Captain Jack’s. They have a nice sitting area and another area with picnic tables. We were impressed with the quality of the apples and the notable difference from some other farms we visited the previous weekend. Will definitely be returning..”

“Great place to spend a day roaming the hills in the sunshine! It’s easy to find and the orchards are well spread out with signs Of the different types of apples. They also have raspberries to pick fresh and a corn maze to wander around in. What fun I had looking at the harvest of Pumpkins, and mini gourds! Also while you're there make sure you make a stop at Captain Jacks donut shack for some hot apple cider donuts! You most definitely won't regret it! 🍏🍎”

“Our first time here but not the last! It's so beautiful and not excessively crowded. Everything is marked well and so easy to just grab a bag and go. We picked peaches, nectarines and apples. Be sure to grab some mini apple cider donuts and blueberry ice cream on your way out.”
