What you can pick
In October, check what’s currently ripe before you go. Seasons below are typical windows for New York, not a guarantee for this exact farm.
Before you go
A short checklist so the trip feels easy — especially helpful for first-time u-pick visits in New York.
- Bring closed-toe shoes, sun protection, water, and containers unless the farm supplies them.
- Call or check the website for today’s picking conditions — mud, rain, and sold-out fields are common.
- Arrive earlier in the day for cooler weather and better selection during peak weekends.
- Cash still helps at smaller stands even when cards are accepted.

“I generally here once a week to either get my supply of donuts, apples, sauces, pears, snacks or other good. I love this place, everyone is friendly and helpful. Tim the owner is continually working to improve this spot adding new features which makes it even more enjoyable. Friday through Sunday the bus opens up where I can go, sit outside, and enjoy a nice chill meal. I am a customer for life…”

“Very nice farm with a WIDE selection of baked goods! Everything was fresh and baked on the Saturday around noon when we stopped by. They have lots of bee products that are locally sourced. They also have some artisanal items that are perfect for gifting. We would definitely go again as the weather warms up and there may be more fruits and veggies available.”

“Delicious barbecue smoked and then fried to perfection. Food and vibes are great but the outdoor seating area could use some work (maybe new benches to replace the ones falling apart and more umbrellas). Store was lovely as well with fresh pies and tons of different beautiful produce and baked goods to pick from!”

“Lovely little farmer market with baked goods and sweets. They had fresh apple cider donuts and were in the process of making some chili. It smelled amazing. On Saturdays they smoke ribs! I can't wait to come back.”

“Salinger’s Orchard in Brewster, NY, Salinger’s Orchard is perfect for those looking for a more intimate, traditional farm experience. The focus on high-quality farm products, particularly their bakery and fresh produce, makes it a top spot for foodies. If you’re seeking a laid-back atmosphere with great food and a touch of apple picking, this is a wonderful place to visit. 1. Apple Picking: While Salinger’s Orchard is more focused on its farm store than large-scale apple picking, they do offer pick-your-own apples in a more relaxed setting compared to other orchards. The selection of apples is often praised for its quality, with a wide variety of apple types available. 2. Farm Store: The on-site farm store is the real standout. It offers a wide range of homemade baked goods, fresh produce, jams, pies, and their famous apple cider donuts. Visitors often rave about the freshness and taste of their baked goods, particularly the pies, which are considered some of the best in the area. 3. Cider and Donuts: Like many orchards, their apple cider donuts are a huge draw. These are often highlighted as a must-try, along with their fresh-pressed apple cider, which is available in the fall. 4. Friendly Atmosphere: Salinger’s Orchard has a reputation for being friendly and welcoming. The staff is often noted for their helpfulness and knowledge about their products, making it a pleasant shopping experience. 5. Scenic and Relaxed: The orchard offers a more peaceful and less commercial experience compared to some larger orchards in the region. It’s perfect for those looking for a quiet outing without the crowds and fanfare of bigger operations. Things to Consider: 1. Limited Activities: Unlike some of the more tourist-oriented orchards, Salinger’s doesn’t offer as many activities like hayrides, corn mazes, or petting zoos. This can be a plus for those looking for a calm, no-frills visit, but families with kids looking for more entertainment might prefer other orchards. 2. Smaller Scale: The apple-picking area is more limited compared to larger orchards, so visitors who prioritize this activity may want to check availability and selection during their visit. 3. Seasonal Crowds: While Salinger’s is less crowded than bigger attractions, it can still get busy during peak apple season and weekends. However, the overall vibe remains more relaxed compared to some of the more commercial orchards nearby.”

“The place has history; the place is huge; the place is beautiful, outside miles of orchard and inside bakery; the place is friendly; however, the food is hit and miss. The donuts are small but tasty; the cinnamon raisin cookies are price but delicious (6.99 for 6 small ones); The Concord Grape reserve is just sugar and jelly for $8. and the cherry stick is just mediocre. You could stop by to visit history if you are nearby; the food is not worth of the trip, the scenery, maybe.”

“A local legend; family owned for four generations. Best known for their apple pies, but a wide variety of other homemade treats as well. Pro tip: reserve your pies in advance of holidays!”
