“The most incredible experiences in life are often hard to put into words…..but I will try……. From the moment you arrive at Bitteroot you are transported away from the real world and welcomed into a traditional working ranch. Everything about Bitteroot is sincerely authentic. From the dinner gong to the rustic cabins and babbling stream that runs through the ranch. Nestled in the valley, the ranch sits perfectly, providing access to the million acres of open plains, forests, national parkland and beyond. The Fox family are very experienced and natural hosts. They run a well oiled machine recruiting only the best wranglers, who are extremely capable, interesting to chat to and above all highly experienced and attentive to your every need. There is always something to be learnt no matter how experienced a rider you may be. Your horse will be tacked up and ready for you to mount for every ride. My party of 4 were booked onto the Range Rider experience after exchanging emails with Hadley based on our riding ability. Her expert intuition was spot on. Our week of riding was a mix of trail rides with long open canters over challenging terrain and long days cow herding through every terrain possible. We loved every minute of every day. Learning the ways to make a head of 260 cows move in the right direction was swift one! Our group quickly rose to the challenge and we formed unbreakable bonds through herding together as a team. On a long day, lunch is on the hoof! We enjoyed some fabulous picnics with breathtaking views and scrumptious food to eat. Other days, we ate back at the ranch. Every meal is carefully prepared and tastes simply exquisite. Meal times are really social and a lovely way to get to know your fellow guests and share your stories from the day over wine and good food. If you are fortunate enough to ride out with Mel, you will be humbled. An amazing lady with a lifetime of experience and a wealth of history and in-depth knowledge of the area and life in the saddle. She is so very generous with her time and conversation……..she is a legend! Bitteroot is a magical place where memories are made forever. If you are looking for a life changing experience……then book straight away…..you will not be disappointed.”

“Bitterroot Ranch will fill your mind with a thousand daydreams. Nestled in a beautiful part of Wyoming, about 40 minutes down a dirt track from the highway, it’s a true working ranch that’s rustic, authentic and everything I hoped for. I joined the fall cattle round-up as a solo female traveller and chose this ranch because I wanted to meet like-minded people, which I did. The round-up rides were incredible. We rode long days through steep climbs and descents, thick forests and wide open spaces at high altitude. The views will take your breath away. It honestly feels like stepping into a Western movie. The fall colours made it even more magical, with golden and orange aspens glowing across the hills. The cattle work was so much fun. It can be challenging, but in the best way. You quickly bond with your group when a few stubborn cows decide to test your teamwork. After long days in the saddle, coming back to my cabin was heaven. The rooms are rustic but very comfortable, and an Epsom salt bath after riding all day felt like the ultimate luxury. The food was incredible too. Every meal was hearty, home cooked and made with real care. The ranch’s own beef was delicious, and dinners around the fire with wine and new friends were the perfect way to end each day. I rode with Hadley and Mel, who run the ranch, and their love for the horses really shows. They make sure everyone feels safe, find opportunities for a good canter when the group is ready, and ensure the horses are ridden properly. I felt completely at ease on every ride. I’d asked for mustangs and quarter horses and was lucky enough to ride Foxy, Breezy, Biscuit and Tippy, who were all amazing and made my trip so special. Don’t hesitate to book this ranch. I was nearly put off by a few older reviews, but Hadley took the time to talk through my concerns, and I’m so glad I went ahead. Bitterroot Ranch made a lifelong dream come true. Thank you to Hadley, Mel and all the wranglers for an unforgettable experience. I hope to be back one day.”

“Where to start…if you’re looking for an authentic ranch adventure vacation, this is it! After conducting extensive research, Bitterroot Ranch emerged as the top choice and exceeded my expectations. From the rustic yet comfortable cabins, to Chef Leon’s culinary skills, to the range of beautiful and well-cared-for horses, friendly and attentive wranglers, and staff, it was truly a dream adventure getaway. Mel and Hadley are true horsewomen, looking out for both the comfort and safety of guests as well as their horses. The endurance two-point riding style I found to be a safer and comfortable experience. Attending the Yoga and Riding week was a definite bonus, thanks to instructor Marc Holzman, who has the magical ability to weave a balance of playful yet deeply insightful yoga practice for all levels. As for some previous reviews that likely expected a more pampered experience, I would say they missed the uniqueness of what an off-the-beaten-path working ranch, 15 miles down a dirt road, truly offers. Cradled between the breathtaking Shoshone National Forest and the Wind River mountain range, this natural luxury is for those seeking to disconnect from the everyday and reconnect with nature, horses, and the camaraderie of fellow adventure seekers. Thank you, Mel and Hadley!!”

“I had the best vacation of my life at the Bitteroot Ranch! This is not your ordinary dude ranch experience. The horses are well taken care of and really fun to ride. Everyone is matched to a horse that meets their riding ability. The guides know the history of the ranch and surrounding area well. I literally felt like I was stepping back in time to a simpler, more peaceful life. The trails and scenery are wonderful! The cabins are very cozy and the meals at the lodge are fantastic. I met like minded horse people from all over the world that I hope to see again. If you really enjoy trail riding on a great horse, then this is the place for you! Also, there is even a yoga yurt, complete with a wonderful yoga instructor and incredible fly fishing on the east fork of the Wind river. I am definitely going back next summer!”

“I grew up in Wyoming, but had not been around the Wind River or Absaroka mountain ranges that much. I think the Bitterroot ranch is nestled in the most beautiful setting I have experienced. The owners and personnel at the ranch are only interested in one thing, and that is to make sure you have the most enjoyable riding, dining and relaxation experience of your life!!!!! I loved every minute I was there and they certainly delivered. I met some wonderful people and made many friends. I will be back to ride their beautiful generous horses, eat the terrific meals and enjoy relaxing looking at the aspen and cottonwood trees painting the mountains and river and creek bottoms in fall colors. Late September is the best time to be in Wyoming in my opinion, but any time spent at the Bitterroot Ranch will be memorable.”

“It has been over 30 years since I was here last, and the ranch is as magical as ever. The horses are incredible quality, many home-bred Arabians, but agile and steady quarter horses as well as ponies to draft crosses. The ranch is beautiful, nestled on a crystal clear river tucked in a fold of the surrounding hills. The cabins have all the comforts of home, the food is amazing, and your fellow riders might be from anywhere in the world. The Fox family are gracious and welcoming, and the staff often have multiple years of experience, so it is obviously a good place to work, as well. Riders are grouped by ability, with rides to different parts of the ranch and the surrounding Shoshone National Forest.”
