Before you go
A short checklist so the trip feels easy — especially helpful for first-time u-pick visits in Illinois.
- Bring closed-toe shoes, sun protection, water, and containers unless the farm supplies them.
- Call or check the website for today’s picking conditions — mud, rain, and sold-out fields are common.
- Wear clothes you don’t mind getting stained; berry juice and field mud travel home with you.
- Cash still helps at smaller stands even when cards are accepted.

“Approximately twenty years ago, when our children were attending field trips, we had the pleasure of visiting Critter's Orchard. It was a delightful apple orchard with a pumpkin patch, a beehive, and several petting animals, including goats, rabbits, and chickens, which the children enjoyed interacting with. It was a truly pleasant experience back then, and the children were particularly fond of it. My husband and I recently revisited the orchard, and we were quite impressed by the transformations. It is truly remarkable. They have significantly enhanced their offerings. The orchard was bustling with children and visitors of all ages. They have a lovely gift shop that offers a diverse selection of items. It was a wonderful day spent admiring pumpkins, honey, and apples, and they even had a cafe where we could enjoy a meal. The food was delicious, with a wide variety of options available.”

“I recently spent a day at Curtis Orchard, and it was a fantastic experience! The apple farm is well-kept, and we had a blast picking our own apples—they were fresh, crisp, and incredibly delicious. We also explored the pumpkin patch, which was full of great pumpkins for fall decorating. For kids, there’s so much to do, from feeding goats to enjoying the playground. The Flying Monkey Cafe is a must-visit; the apple cider donuts and hot cider made for the perfect snack. This place captures the essence of fall and is perfect for families or anyone looking to get into the seasonal spirit. Highly recommend for a fun, memorable outing!”

“A really fun outing for families, especially those with small children. It was so much fun to pick apples in the u-pick orchards. They tell you which rows to pick from. They give you a bag that you can fill up as much as you want. There's a café with indoor and outdoor seating and a gift shop selling cider, apples, donuts and other treats. There are cats that they adopt that are roaming around. The hayride was fun to do. It makes you feel like you are stepping back in time. Overall this is a great place to visit. It was very busy the day I visited.”

“Amazing place to visit! So many cool things for kids and adults alike! Many fun activities with toys and games for kids! Go into the store for a wide assortment of products that are local and fresh! Too many to list! The donuts are the freshest we have had in a long time! Just stop by and you will be amazed! Plenty of photo ops! Glad we stopped in!”

“First time visiting. It was VERY busy. No admission fee to enter unless you opt to pick your own pumpkins and apples. Several fun things for our granddaughter to do. She especially enjoyed the big slide, and the pony ride. It only went in a small circle but she liked the experience. Didn't eat anything there so I cant comment on that. We got a couple nice pumpkins which were reasonably priced. We will definately return and have an adult day to be able to experience other activities not easily enjoyed with a little one in tow. I recommend a visit there if you've never gone.”

“Was warm in August, but there was a great variety of produce, local foods, crafts and activities! They had apple juice slushies which looked good. Took a bit to navigate to the parking lot from Google Map directions. Also pricing wasn't completely clear about whether or not tax was included. This would be a great place for kids! I hope to make it back in the future during fall weather. I've heard good things about the pumpkin donuts.”

“I miss the old token system… requiring wristbands for the parents who just want to be within eyesight of their kids is a bit much. I think it would work better to let wristbands only inside the attractions but have the open area free to enter. This was a much more enjoyable experience last year.”
