Before you go
A short checklist so the trip feels easy — especially helpful for first-time u-pick visits in Hawaii.
- Bring closed-toe shoes, sun protection, water, and containers unless the farm supplies them.
- Call or check the website for today’s picking conditions — mud, rain, and sold-out fields are common.
- Arrive earlier in the day for cooler weather and better selection during peak weekends.
- Cash still helps at smaller stands even when cards are accepted.

“The Orchard Suite is probably the best spot to stay on the ENTIRE island. Every place we stayed after just didn't compare. To start the room itself is absolutely beautiful, perfectly laid out and clean with lovely decor, floors and ceilings. The view on the lanai was breathtaking and was easy to enjoy inside as well because of the large glass doors that span the whole back half of the space. We enjoyed a sunrise bath with our coffee that was provided for us. The cabin was stocked with all of the cooking supplies and dishes we needed to prepare a meal and enjoy a bottle of wine. It also had an ironing board and iron to help with all of our suitcase wrinkles. My partner and I had a private vow exchange on the property at sunrise and it couldn't have been more beautiful. Paula was very helpful finding us local vendors to provide my wives hair and makeup and the place where we got our flowers. The location is very close to the valley and not far from a very cute downtown area. There were mosquitoes on the property so make sure to keep the screens shut.”

“ROMANTIC & MAGICAL! We had our elopement ceremony on the lower lawn with Waipio Valley in the background. Absolute paradise, I'm so glad we chose Hale Kukui Orchard for our wedding 😊 The property was so gorgeous I could not stop taking pictures. Fresh fruit to pick while you wander. Daniel, the host and his doggies are wonderful, welcoming & great company. When he walked us into the cottage, I was speechless. The views are to die for. We even saw a family of whales on a few occasions. Coqui frogs sang me to sleep, and the waves crashing melted all my stress away. Can't wait to come back!”

“This was a cool place to stay. The view you see online is indeed the view you get from your room (!) If you walk out through the orchard to the lookout you can get an even wider view of the cliffs and ocean. We stayed in the studio, it was the perfect size for a couple, plenty of room. It was rather humid (at least when we stayed in February) so be prepared for that. ||||There was something so relaxing about soaking in the tub (even w/out jets as others have mentioned). Nothing but that view and peace and quiet :)||Picking fruit from the orchard was a lot of fun and we had fresh juice every morning. And this is a small detail, but the coffee we were provided, whatever it was, was great.||||Really no negatives to say! This was a fun place to stay and a little different. We drove and explored a lot of the East side of the island as well as the Hilo area and waterfalls from here. We stayed here for three nights as part of a longer trip to the big island, and it worked out great. The nearby town Honoka'a (about a 10 or 15 minute drive I think) is small but laid back and friendly, it ended up being one of our favorite towns on the island. If you are planning a trip to the big island I would definitely recommend spending some time at Hale Kukui. It was a great value too, for the money you spend you really get something special.”

“Hale Kukui is a dream! Incredible property, w SPECTACULAR views!!! staying here is really all about the setting. we could have spent all day sitting on the bench overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the cliffs descending to the Waipio Valley. This is not a fancy resort with tons of amenities, so do not go there expecting this or you will be let down. It is, however, very comfortable and inviting. Our cottage (Orchard Studio) was well kept, well equipped, clean, functional, cozy and had an INCREDIBLE view!!! The kitchen is equipped to cook your own meals and there is a grill on the deck. We didn’t cook, but brought back food from a great restaurant in town (10-15 mins down the road) and ate on the deck watching the sunset.||||Paula and Dan a great hosts, there for whatever you need, but give you all the space and privacy you desire. We really enjoyed having a drink w Paula on the lawn outside the main house one evening. ||||The orchard is cute, and you are free to pick and eat whatever fruit is in season during your stay. We ate endless Starfruit. ||||Also….we got married at Hale Kukui during our 3 day stay, and it was a picture perfect spot for a small wedding!”

“We had the pleasure of staying in a cottage at Hale Kukui for five nights and we enjoyed it immensely. Paula and Dan, the caretakers were wonderful. They were available, yet live in their own home on the premises so we enjoyed our privacy. The cottage is perfect. The view is magnificent. All amenities were provided including extra linens and towels, beach umbrella and chairs, a full kitchen, and an outside tub on the balcony/porch. I particularly enjoyed soaking in the tub in the evening while listening to the night sounds. Fresh fruit is available for picking right from their orchard. Dan provided us with a detailed map to help us find the very best beaches, lookouts, restaurants and shops in the area. The town is not far and we were able to shop for groceries for breakfast and snacks/wine. I cannot tell you how enjoyable our stay was. Do not miss the opportunity to stay at this lovely cottage.”

“Hale Kukui was a stunning backdrop for our wedding ceremony. We also stayed in the cabins the night before and the night of our wedding. We got ready in the cabins on the day of, too! Dan provided fans and the breeze on the top of the cliff also helped to keep us cool. ||Dan and his two cute dogs were there to greet us and Dan allowed us to drop things off in the cabins early. He gave us a tour of the property and was a very kind host. ||The ceremony location was simple and incredibly beautiful. We hadn't seen the venue before arriving for our destination wedding, and we could not have been happier. It looks like a movie set. He even let us use the chairs on the property for our ceremony and we loved how that looked. The natural beauty of the scenery helped us and our guests to be in the moment and grateful to be surrounded by love.”

“This is one of the loveliest places we've ever stayed in. We rented both the house and the ocean studio for our group, and both were outstanding. They were clean, comfortable, well-equipped, and in an absolutely magical setting with gorgeous grounds and stunning views of the sea and Waipio Valley. Coffee on the porch overlooking the ocean is a great way to start the day! We also enjoyed the the grounds, which have an orchard where you can pick fresh fruit, and the surrounding area, which is lovely.||The caretakers were welcoming, helpful, and accommodating. We could not have asked for more.”

“No words can explain Hale Kukui. The view is incredible from the Point, each porch has a different view of the ocean and cliffs.| So peaceful, beautiful cool evening. Hale Kukui is a place everyone should experience.”
