Before you go

A short checklist so the trip feels easy — especially helpful for first-time u-pick visits in Michigan.

  • Bring closed-toe shoes, sun protection, water, and containers unless the farm supplies them.
  • Call or check the website for today’s picking conditions — mud, rain, and sold-out fields are common.
  • Wear clothes you don’t mind getting stained; berry juice and field mud travel home with you.
  • Payment notes on file: Discover, Mastercard, VISA. Cash still helps at smaller stands.

What visitors say

“I always find what I am looking for, and something new to try among the wide variety of produce. The pricing is clear and fair. The location is very convenient when I am running errands around St. Joseph/Benton Harbor, yet it feels like being way out in the countryside, even though it's a short trip up Benton Center Road. Senior citizens who qualify for Michigan's Senior Market FRESH program should be aware that Sommerfeldt's Farm does participate. I also admire that they are present at the Benton Harbor Farmer's Market in the summer, and accept the SNAP Bridge Card, and WIC Project FRESH coupons, along with the Senior Market FRESH cards, there and at their farm property. Doing the legwork and vendor education to offer these programs for lower-income people in the community takes hours of on-line work, and the redemption process to get paid is not as streamlined as it should be for the vendors. Sommerfeldt's and other produce farmers deserve credit for doing this unseen and time-consuming work to boost fruit and vegetable consumption among lower-income communities and senior citizens on a fixed income.”

“October 31, 2017. My sister recommended Sommerfeldt Farms because of their great produce and fair prices. I obviously made it late in the season but I found maple syrup from a tree on this farm and raw, local honey . They still had a few beautiful tomatoes and a lot of typical produce for this time of year. Apples, eggplant, squash, gourds, bell peppers and more. My sister buys black berries here in season. The young man working that day was very helpful and informative. Much of their fresh produce was marked down.”

“Local gem! I've been buying 10# boxes of blueberries from this farm for several years. The quality of produce is wonderful, the variety of items plentiful, the owners very pleasant! I always feel happy when visiting this adorable produce market.”

“I love this place! They have the freshest produce, but why wouldn't they? Much of what they sell is grown right there! The people there are very friendly and made me feel welcome. I highly recommend them for anyone looking for real, local food!”

“Absolutely cutest farm stand I’ve been too. Owner is incredibly friendly and I enjoyed hearing the history behind the place and this beautiful original wagon. We can’t wait to try our Michigan honey, syrup and blueberries!!”

“I'm very impressed. I don't weigh stuff, and I get excited around real fruit and veg, but the cost usually stings a bit. Not here! For all I got - I shared with my caregiver, even - it was very inexpensive. I'm very happy!”

“Great people, great produce. Honestly if you’re looking for REAL FOOD, or just a friendly conversation this is the place to go. Super excited to see what else they have in store for the year. Support your local farmers.”

“Visited for a local fall festival event thrown by an outside group. There were a couple small games and prizes, a slide, pumpkins, produce, and apple cider for sale, and a Port-A-Potty. It was a decent experience but very cold. Visited a year later (2023) and the event was great! The produce was fresh, the pumpkins were huge, and the customer service was awesome! I would return again and recommend to others.”
