“It’s not often that I indulge in ice cream—but when I do, it has to be truly exceptional. This past summer, I finally visited for the first time after hearing about it for years from my husband, who grew up coming here and has visited more times than he can count. I’m happy to say it more than lived up to its reputation. This charming spot is tucked away in Middletown and absolutely worth the drive. Parking is easy and convenient, with a gravel lot located directly across from the shop. Inside, you’ll find much more than just ice cream. Along with their delicious scoops, they offer a wonderful assortment of farm-fresh goods, including milk straight from the farm (2%, whole, skim, chocolate, buttermilk, and half & half), bee pollen, creamed honey, fresh bread, apple butter, and even adorable plush stuffed animals. Their ice cream flavors rotate seasonally based on availability and demand, which makes every visit feel special. My husband’s longtime favorite is the Red Velvet, while I chose Dirt Road and Mint Two—both classic flavors executed perfectly and incredibly satisfying. Across the street, there’s a small barn where you can see the cows. Tickets to feed them can be purchased online, but they sell out quickly and are often booked for the entire summer, so it’s best to plan ahead. It’s a fantastic, family-friendly experience and one I highly recommend. The staff is consistently friendly and welcoming, always happy to offer samples so you can find the perfect flavor. There’s also a handwashing station outside, along with plenty of picnic tables if you’d like to sit and enjoy your ice cream before heading over to see the cows—or you can simply grab and go. From the quality of the ice cream to the thoughtful details and warm service, this place delivers a memorable experience every time.”

“We visited South Mountain Creamery for my son’s birthday, and we had such an amazing time! From seeing the cows in the maternity ward to feeding the calves, every moment was a beautiful and memorable experience. As you can see, we fully embraced the theme and we learned so much along the way! The staff member pictured here was absolutely wonderful. She was so patient, knowledgeable, and kind. She took the time to teach us about the different types of cows and helped my son build the confidence to interact, which meant so much. So sorry I forgot to get her name but she was a god send. We truly had a blast and will definitely be back!”

“South Mountain Creamery is on the Maryland ice cream trail. This is my first visit and it did not disappoint. Hand batch ice cream made in their Chambersburg, PA location is dipped here. Scrumptious! They milk and bottle their fresh milk here on site so you can pick up a half gallon or two when you stop for delicious ice cream. You won’t regret the beautiful drive for this ice cream!”

“Our experience here was incredible. Wasn’t sure what to expect, but ended up petting and feeding baby dairy cows. They also have the most amazing Ice Cream. It was literally the best any of us had ever tasted! Recommend making reservation in advance to bottle feed the baby cows. But even if you don’t, you get to walk through the barn and pet the babies. One was born the day we went!”

“Came to smith mountain creamery on the ice cream tour! Such a great experience the cookie butter ice cream was delicious. Very cool to hear about the factory and the cows. Getting to pet the cows at the end was very cool too. Wish I could’ve gotten to make ice cream on the farm but amazing!”

“Great place to take kids to learn about where milk comes from and the process to get it from the cow to the table. Staff is amazing and extremely informative. The ice cream and milk are amazing. It was fun to see where our favorite chocolate milk we purchase back home comes from.”

“Best farm!!! It has a playground for kids to play. It had the best ice cream ever🤤. And the best part is the funny cows 🐄. You can feed them and play with them. You have to come to this farm!!!!!!!!”

“Wow best ice cream we ever tasted! We all got only one sample then bought a cup of that flavor so delicious! Snallygaster is back for those that were worried ha. We booked online ahead of time to feed baby cows. It was fun to see all the kids running into the barn when it was finally feeding time. Amazingly clean for a farm but don't wear your best outfits or shoes. Eat ice cream first is my recommendation. We will 100% be back.”
