Van De Walle Farms

“I’ve been enjoying Van De Walle Picante since the mid 1980’s, they showed up as a competitor to make a product more savory than Pace Picante and I believe they succeeded. Zoom forward 20 years and Van De Walle gets bought out by food service behemoth Bay Valley Foods, producers of the incomparable Scwartz’s Pickles. Bay Valley has the production and distribution to handle a giant like Wal Mart and it’s about that time that Van De Walle started disappearing from HEB shelves and showing up at Wal Mart in the mid to late 2000’s. Meanwhile Bay Valley continued to operate the Van De Walle plant in San Antonio making the delicious Picante we know and love. In the ever growing salsa wars where food giants compete for market share Wal Mart approaches Bay Valley (aka Van De Walle Farms) and propositions them to be the manufacturer of Wal Mart’s struggling “Great Value” house branded Picante sauce. Bay Valley agrees to supply Wal Mart and Wal Mart slowly phases out Bay Valley / Van De Walle inventory replacing their Great Value line with the delicious salsa Van De Walle Farms Picante in mid 2018. Has anyone else noticed how delicious Wal Mart Great Value Picante is these days ? Has anyone else noticed the Great Value Picante jar has changed its shape from a simple round cylinder to that of the necked down shape of the vintage Van De Walle Farms Picante jar from the 1980’s ? Most importantly has anyone else noticed that Van De Walle Picante disappeared at Wal Mart at the same time the Great Value Picante label and glass container changed ? I’m telling you, if you haven’t bought any Wal Mart brand Great Value Picante Sauce In 2019 now is the time to make it happen, it’s a perfect match to the glorious, original Van De Walle Picante sauce and now Wal Mart has a house brand Picante that triggers repeat sales, undercuts Pace / Campbell’s and positions Wal Mart to be dominant In the salsa category.”
