A short checklist so the trip feels easy — especially helpful for first-time u-pick visits in Connecticut.

  • Bring closed-toe shoes, sun protection, water, and containers unless the farm supplies them.
  • Call or check the website for today’s picking conditions — mud, rain, and sold-out fields are common.
  • Arrive earlier in the day for cooler weather and better selection during peak weekends.
  • Cash still helps at smaller stands even when cards are accepted.

“I was looking for a new "pick your own" Apple farm after my long time childhood favorite Wrights Orchard closed down and was pleasantly surprised to come across Crookes Orchard. This property used to be Horse Listeners farm but now has new owners and they've done a great job making it a quaint family friendly orchard to pick your own apples, peaches and other fruits. Their shop is well organized and decorated for the seasons. The property itself is beautiful and very well kept, just be prepared to walk a little to get to the apple section. Prices are fair and on par with what you'd expect for a small business, especially considering we are seeing less and less "pick your own" orchards around. They sell apple cider, pumpkins, apple donuts, flowers, and other seasonal themed goods you'd expect an orchard to have. The only recommendations I'd make are since they have a lot of open space away from the apple section is they set up some seasonal themed games or decorations for kids and families to use/see as well as a few tables people could sit and socialize at. I also personally think it would look great if they got a big apple plaque to put on the back of their stone building facing the road so people could see it a little better while driving by. All in all it's a great place to take your partner or kids and owned by really friendly people. I'm excited to go back as well as visit during other seasons to see what they have. It's refreshing to find a place with owners who put care into their business.”

“A lovely local orchard/farm store set on a beautiful Connecticut hill. One of my early work opportunities was loading up the cider mill there, taking care of tender plants, and digging up live pines. It's wonderful to see it back to the original name and in the excellent care of a new generation. Very friendly staff and "pick a peck" or half peck of beautiful mix and match apple varieties. Lovely collection of local crafts mixed with tasty treats from all over, a well-curated collection. Well worth a lovely country drive!”

“We first visited last week and were so happy to see what the new owners have done with the farm. We're even more happy to see that it's still an operating farm with a beautiful vista and not another housing development as so many farms in the quiet corner are falling victim to. The apple cider donuts are literally the best we've ever had and the sparking cider is amazing. Everything we purchased was top notch. We will return again and again. Remember to support the family farms and buy local.”

“We had a wonderful experience at Crooke’s yesterday! Although the orchard isn’t officially open for the season yet, the owner kindly let us in. We picked fresh blueberries, they were absolutely delicious, and the bushes were easy to access. The entire orchard was clean, peaceful, and well-maintained. The owner was incredibly kind and welcoming, which made our visit even more enjoyable. Highly recommend this place for a relaxing and fun outing. We can’t wait for the official opening in Aug.”

“We love this orchard! Great pick your own fruits, nice little farm store with basic things you may need in a pinch (eggs, cheese, apples, etc) and beautiful flower bouquets that are grown from seed right on the property. Everyone who works there is extremely nice & accommodating...we are lucky to live less than 5 minutes away!”

“(Horse Listeners Farm review!) Such a great business with amazing staff, great fresh/local products and awesome horses! (Note: all photos in this review were from the former Horse Listener's Farm. These are not Crooke's Orchard reopened in 2025. Crooke's revival is underwhelming compared to Horse Listener's Farm)”

“Kudos for the most delicious non-alcoholic sparking cider! But the real treat is the apple cider donuts. They are worthy of 6+ Stars! The best I have ever eaten! I've been going to the orchard for years (15+) and love your new set up.”

“Absolutely beautiful orchard with lots of apples to pick. The family that bought it from Horse listeners farm are wonderful and I wish them all the best! Will definitely return in the future 😊”
