“What a treat! This market has grown exponentially over the last five years, and it shows. It’s best to arrive early — parking is free in the X and Y lots, with additional metered spots nearby. There’s also plenty of on‑street parking in Old Town, and with Ames building a new parking garage on Lincoln Way, the pressure should ease even more in coming seasons. The atmosphere is lively and welcoming, with lots of vendors, friendly faces, and plenty of pets. Strollers, leashed dogs, and even the occasional cat‑carrier backpack are part of the charm. (If you’re not an animal person, this might not be your scene 😉.) Some weekends even bring a small petting zoo or pony rides. The food is always fantastic! The fresh lemonade and old‑fashioned ice cream are must‑haves. Organic veggies are abundant, but the mushrooms go fast, so grab them early. You’ll find everything from stones and local meat to gluten‑free cupcakes, fresh produce, and local artists. There’s truly something for everyone. Keep an eye out for the balloon lady — she’s worth the wait. And we love seeing the Bookmobile; check their schedule if you want to catch them. My kids like to watch for local musicians playing in the square and Pumpkin Patch hosting a small story time, circling through old classics. The market layout improved this year, they shifted everything down the street a bit, a small but noticeable change that really helped with last year’s overcrowding. You'll bump into people you know which is part of what keeps Ames' small town charm in a growing city. Restrooms are limited (porta‑potties available), but the Ames Public Library and the Community Center are just a block away. Personally, I grab a coffee from Café Diem at the start and use their newly updated bathrooms before diving into the market. Then we cool down at the library afterward — perfect balance with four little ones in tow. The location is great, with boutiques and shops lining the block. Ames History Museum and the Octagon are just to the north. The Bandshell Park playground is right across Duff, and there’s often a public event happening, so it’s easy to pop over after you’re done shopping. There aren’t drinking fountains at the market, but restrooms and water fountains are also available near the Shell. Ames Farmers’ Market is one of those places that makes this city feel like home!”

“This is an amazing aspect of Ames! Everyone at the market is always very friendly and helpful. The local goods are always better than store bought as well! It is super cool that this is pet friendly as well since it is always nice to see our four legged friends out and about! Definitely an every Saturday thing to do! It is also a plus that most places are able to take cards not just cash! Just remember to ask first!”

“Main street Farmer's Market is great. Lots of good food, live music and interesting booths. The music today was wonderful. Performer named Ace who was so talented. We are so fortunate to have these diverse community opportunities.”

“So much fresh organic veggies & peaches! Great soap, signage, baked goods, and a variety of other offerings”

“Has a little bit of everything including food stands. Has a guy there who sells homemade wine. Very good.”

“The vendors were amazing, and tons of family friendly activities. My daughter even got to feed a goat.”

“If you go, go EARLY! Otherwise you will drive around for a minimum of 15 minutes looking for a parking spot. Also, 2 stars because they don’t have a community center or place with a public restroom. I asked a vendor where I could use a restroom and he told me a porta potty was at the opposite end - I told him never mind as that wasn’t happening. Various vendors but not as many as we expected…. Also, I don’t believe dogs should be allowed because there is always one that barks too much or growls at other dogs which is asking for a problem.”

“The venders take all the parking and make it impossible to shop my favorite stores, move the down the road to the depot and road in front of that”
