A short checklist so the trip feels easy — especially helpful for first-time u-pick visits in Virginia.

  • Bring closed-toe shoes, sun protection, water, and containers unless the farm supplies them.
  • Call or check the website for today’s picking conditions — mud, rain, and sold-out fields are common.
  • Arrive earlier in the day for cooler weather and better selection during peak weekends.
  • Cash still helps at smaller stands even when cards are accepted.

“My family and I visited Ft Valley Farm today, and despite the gloomy weather, we had an absolutely incredible time! The farm was peaceful and uncrowded, which made for a relaxing experience. I brought my wife and two kids, and we couldn’t have asked for a better day. We started by picking some of the freshest Honeycrisp apples we’ve ever had—juicy and perfectly ripe. Afterward, we decided to check out the farm store, where we purchased two pounds of ground beef and a jar of their homemade pasta sauce. When we got home, we immediately cooked up a pasta dish using the beef and sauce, and I can confidently say it was the best-tasting meal we’ve had in a long time. The ground beef was incredibly fresh and flavorful, unlike anything you’d find at a grocery store. The pasta sauce was rich, bursting with real flavors, and you could tell it was made with high-quality ingredients—none of the fillers or artificial flavors that you get in typical store-bought sauces. Ft Valley Farm exceeded our expectations in every way. The atmosphere, the quality of the products, and the friendly staff all made for an unforgettable experience. If you’re looking for top-notch farm-fresh produce, meats, and other local goods, Ft Valley Farm is a must-visit! We can’t wait to return for more.”

“This is a wonderful farm for apple, peach, and pumpkin picking. It's a quaint little farm that we loved. We have been to Graves Mountain Farm and while the view are extraordinary, it is so packed. This farm was not, and we enjoyed the 9 varieties of apples that we could pick ourselves. The trees are dwarf trees, so they are easy to pick off of and clearly marked with the types, which you can mix and match. We picked a 1/2 bushel of apples, which was a large box for $30 and then we bought some varieties that they let us try in the gift shop for $1.99/lb. We found it to be much more reasonable than other farms and liked that there was no entrance fee just to go into the orchard. Everyone was very nice, and we will definitely be back!”

“This place was definitely worth the trip. We normally visit another location but a friend recommended it because of the zero admission fee. We weren’t disappointed. Deb and Meredith were extremely helpful. They patiently answered our questions. The layout is very simple and easy. The apples are delicious! Made some purchases in their market like rum apple butter and apple cider dressing. Loved that it was not overly crowded! The kids had a chance to run around and enjoy a beautiful day. We hope to make it for peach season next year.”

“This was the perfect finale to our fall weekend. We spent a fall weekend in Shenandoah, and wanted to swing by a dog-friendly apple orchard on our drive back to DC. FT Valley Farm was perfect. Dog friendly, amazing/helpful staff, more apple varities than I knew existed, and a beautiful location in the mountains. It was the best apple & pumpkin picking experience we've had. Only thing that could have improved it would be apple cider donuts - but maybe that's coming in a future year. We'll be back!”

“Dog friendly orchard close to Shenandoah. Friendly staffs, ample parking spaces on a Saturday. There were many varieties of apples to choose from. You can expect to spend 2 hours picking apples. There is no entry fee, you’ll need to pay per the quantity.”

“We loved our visit here! Everyone was super friendly, the store had fun things, the apple slushies were great, and the apple orchard was super cute and great especially for little ones to be able to reach apples. Can't wait to return!”

“The slushies and cider are wonderful here! And the peaches and apples are so good! The apples aren't sprayed and everything tastes delicious. It's also a beautiful place to visit.”
