Before you go

A short checklist so the trip feels easy — especially helpful for first-time u-pick visits in Virginia.

  • Bring closed-toe shoes, sun protection, water, and containers unless the farm supplies them.
  • Call or check the website for today’s picking conditions — mud, rain, and sold-out fields are common.
  • Wear clothes you don’t mind getting stained; berry juice and field mud travel home with you.

“Overlook has been our place for fresh fruits, vegetables, deli meats, and baked goods since we moved to the Harrisonburg area. I love how their produce and deals change with the seasons. When we have visitors in town, we always bring them to Overlook! They are one of the only places in the valley where you can get canary melons (like a cross between a cantaloupe and a sweet watermelon), romanesco, and fresh figs. They also have some of the hugest peaches and tomatoes you will ever see. The greenhouse carries indoor and outdoor plants yead-round, with a huge and well cared-for selection. Staff are always helpful and there when you need them. The deli and bakery deserves its own praise. Donuts are good even late into the afternoon; packed with flavorful homemade fillings. All sandwiches are delicious. You cannot go wrong with anything you order. And, they do their fries in tallow! If you have the time to stop on the highway, definitely take exit 240 and check them out! We visit at least once a week, and will sorely miss them if we ever move.”

“We went in search of a farm market and found this right off the Interstate. First off, it's conveniently located, so quick and easy to get to. But once you're there you'll notice that there's a steady flow of traffic in and out. That's usually a good sign that it's a quality market. We found a wide array of fruits, vegetables, and an assortment of other goods. We took home some fruit cider, a watermelon, and various other goods, and we're quite satisfied. We also ate lunch, having among the four of us a roast beef sandwich, a burger, and some ribs. The food was obviously made from quality meats and vegetables, and we agreed that we'd be back again. To feed four people for a shade over $50 seems reasonable for how good it was. The staff were friendly and helpful, and we felt quite welcome. Definitely worth the visit if you're in the area.”

“Heard from a friend that not only can you get delicious fresh produce and new healthy garden plants/flowers but Overlook Produce also has an amazing lunch food selection! My husband tried the Lebanon bologna and I had the turkey blt. They were both fantastic- nice fresh bread toasted a little and super fresh tasting ingredients. To top it all off the gals running the deli side were sweet and motivated to help even when there was a rush of people! You should definitely put this lunch destination on our list as a stop if you are headed up to Harrisonburg or from Harrisonburg down to Waynesboro area!”

“Love it!!! I wish I lived closer so I could get all my groceries here! Everything is fresh & the colors of the foods are bright & inviting!! I wanted to buy at least 1 of everything! I was not expecting alllll the beautiful plants!!!!! A large selection of everything!! And make sure you go to the bakery!! Their glazed donuts are the best I've ever had!! The lemon cheesecake is so creamy & the amount of lemon flavor is perfect! I even ate the small piece of lemon that was on top! Yummy crust also! 😋”

“Long time fan and supporter of this locally grown produce and many local items as well. Some is not but that's normal nowadays to guarantee year round inventory. The Mennonite communities of the Valley are some of the hardest working, nicest people you will ever meet.”

“This is the best place ever! Donuts and pastries are bomb! Bbq sandwich was awesome! Beef Tallow Fries! Prices are great! Every encounter with staff was super pleasant. Produce is Great!”

“A hidden gem right off I-81 — part greenhouse, part produce stand, and part treasure hunt. There’s a huge variety of plants, and the flowers were absolutely beautiful — with an entire field of mums just waiting to bloom. The produce was fresh and inviting, and the large open-air barn was filled with unique knickknacks and little finds that make browsing a lot of fun. You could easily spend an hour here exploring everything. The deli featured plenty of bakery items, and the donuts were fresh and delicious. Prices were fair, and the overall selection was broad and worth checking out.”

“My husband and I had wanted to go for a long time after seeing the pictures of the delicious foods. We finally made the trip and it was a nice warm day and it wasn't very crowded. We enjoyed walking through the open market and seeing the unique varieties of beautiful produce, baked goods, jellies, honey, salsas, etc. We bought those yummy looking cinnamon buns, doughnuts and several other items. We even took a souvenir picture, returned home and enjoyed our afternoon. However, the next morning when we had the cinnamon buns we were so disappointed. They were stale! And, so we're the doughnuts when we tried them. I wrote an email from their website and never heard anything.”
