What you can pick

In October, check what’s currently ripe before you go. Seasons below are typical windows for Virginia, not a guarantee for this exact farm.

Before you go

A short checklist so the trip feels easy — especially helpful for first-time u-pick visits in Virginia.

  • Bring closed-toe shoes, sun protection, water, and containers unless the farm supplies them.
  • Call or check the website for today’s picking conditions — mud, rain, and sold-out fields are common.
  • Arrive earlier in the day for cooler weather and better selection during peak weekends.
  • Cash still helps at smaller stands even when cards are accepted.

“Great customer service. Ordered the Stayman apples and they had great flavor. The first box I got had a mealy texture when I bit into one (tried the same day I received). I called and asked for a replacement. They sent a replacement box of apples at no cost and I received it within a day with amazing flavor and texture! Great customer service and super friendly. Will be ordering again in the future!”

“I absolutely LOVE sending out SVO gift boxes as gifts. My family lives all over the country so I enjoy sending them a piece of my sweet Shenandoah Valley. Last Christmas, I sent multiple boxes out and all arrived in time for the holiday. Ordering was quick and easy, too. Plus, the price was right and even included shipping!”

“Good prices and knowledgeable staff. Check to be sure they are open before you go as the hours vary. In peach season they have wonderful peaches and can tell how ripe the different varieties are. The honey crisp apples (available around Labor Day) are incredibly delicious apples at a good price.”

“These apples are AMAZING!! We moved to a new state and couldn’t find my beloved Stayman Winesaps in any local markets. Turkey Knob shipped gorgeous fresh apples that are bursting with flavor and juice practically overnight!”

“I was very pleased with the quick service and shipping time from VA to AZ. The apples arrived in excellent condition. I highly recommend Shenandoah Valley Orchard.”

“Staymen apples tasted old and flavorless. The apple was not crunchy but mealy. Mealiness happens to old apples that have been kept in storage or improper stored too long. The box was packed on November 3rd, ordered November 17th and arrived November 19. My guess would be that they were picked around October 15th. With the cost around $5.00 a pound I feel robbed and determined never to order from them again. And to share my experience to discourage anyone else that are thinking of ordering not to.”

“Normally good products, but very discouraged by "the you cannot taste on the premises" policy. The early peaches are very average.. and you have to buy them to find out. As i did. They do tell you they are excellent but it's not always advisable to rely on a sales persons discretion.. There are several other orchards nearby with better pricing and the ability to taste what you're getting.”

“I check in early in the morning around 7:20a.m. or so and this Caucasian woman(which is the supervisor) was being rude and impatient and decided to curse me out. I do not recommend coming to Pick a load up from this place if you are a person of color.”
