Before you go
A short checklist so the trip feels easy — especially helpful for first-time u-pick visits in Virginia.
- Bring closed-toe shoes, sun protection, water, and containers unless the farm supplies them.
- Call or check the website for today’s picking conditions — mud, rain, and sold-out fields are common.
- Arrive earlier in the day for cooler weather and better selection during peak weekends.
- Cash still helps at smaller stands even when cards are accepted.

“This is not a fancy apple retailer - it is a working farm. Expect that the experience will be different, but the prices are about half what they sell down the street. Note that the sign says 'Closed Sunday' but some people think this place is also closed Saturday. At the end of this road, the pavement will end and it will become a gravel driveway. You are there, almost. Go up the gravel driveway, then wind your way around (follow the sign that says 'tractor trailers' and a smaller sign that says apple sales) past equipment to a very old loading dock. That is where you will see boxes of apples. I found a door, knocked and opened it, to find workmen talking. I asked if they sold retail and they told me someone would be out shortly to help me. Several minutes later, a very nice woman came out and assisted me plus insured that the boxes were full. I borrowed the hand truck to get my two full and heavy boxes of apples out to my car, returned the hand truck and drove away very happy. We will go back next year.”

“Fitzgerald's apples are the best around. You will not find better tasting apples at a better price. It is a working farm that feels industrial so don't expect knick-knacks or a tourist shop. But if you're coming for a bushel of incredible apples at a good price, you won't be disappointed. I will be telling everyone I know about this place.”

“A great place to get apples at a great price. Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald are such classic owner, operators and always so welcoming. We love their Pink Lady apples. They have a good selection of various types of apples. It is well worth the few extra miles that you drive.”

“This is a small family owned and operated orchard. I travel from Richmond to get my pink lady apples there. The scenery, price and freshness of the apples all make the trip worthwhile. I look forward each fall to this outing.”

“Got some beautiful pink ladys at a very reasonable price. $30/bushel for the best pink ladys that I've ever had (other apple varieties were $25/bushel). Cash or check only. Well worth the drive.”

“My fave orchard. No glam, no glitz. Good apples, good folk. Lovely region of terra firma.”

“Great prices ($15-20 for a bushel) but can only buy a bushel at a time. About 3-5 varieties available depending on when during season you go.”
